3-Minute Interview with Coach Rahim

The football coach at Friendship Collegiate Academy in Northeast Washington is gearing up for another autumn on the gridiron. Since Abdul-Rahim became head coach in 2004, his program has regularly sent its players -- including 19 last year -- to college football programs.

How would you boil down your recipe for success in getting players to major programs?

It's about surrounding yourself with like-minded coaches. We also lay out expectations. It's more about keeping players in line and on track academically and athletically throughout the year. We don't have a lot of downtime during those periods in which kids may not play a sport. Those are critical times when there could be some negativity that could affect their whole future.

When Tanya Green was tapped to turn around the once-beleaguered Calverton Middle School in 2008, she paid close attention to not only what the staff in her school had to say about their barriers, but how they said it -- or sometimes what they failed to say at all.

She noticed if they referred to students as, "these kids," or "the children." She noticed whether they took responsibility for their students' failures, or transferred it on someone else. She took note of whether a teacher was as concerned about whether their students had lunch as they were about their test score

High school football: Friendship Collegiate picks up a big win over St. John’s, 21-6

With time running down in the fourth quarter Saturday and St. John’s making a desperate march downfield, Friendship Collegiate senior linebacker Yannick Ngakoue watched a teammate snag an interception and located the nearest Cadets player.

Moments later, after he had knocked a wide receiver to the ground with a vicious hit in front of the Cadets’ bench, Ngakoue swung his arms demonstrably at his opponent’s sideline.
